Happy Lunar New Year!

Happy year of the golden pig! We're a little late. We were unable to go to any parties, but Graycen finally tried on her Chinese New Year outfit, complete with tiger hat and shoes that we got when we were in China. If she didn't wear it this year, then she wasn't going to be able to fit in the outfit or shoes next year. She barely squeezed into the shoes today.

We went to the CP Center in St Louis last week. We were given a lot of encouraging news, a little overwhelming, but very encouraging. Graycen will be getting Botox (yes, the wrinkle injections) on March 5th. This will help relax her muscles that are now tight from spasticity. We will be getting her reverse walker soon, and hopefully the combination of the injections and working with the walker will help her learn to walk. In about a year or so, we will probably be looking at a surgery: Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy at St. Louis Children's Hospital. We will have to wait for the Botox to wear off, be evaluated and then hopefully schedule the surgery. The method behind doing the Botox now is to help her to learn to walk, so that when she has the surgery she will have the memory of walking to work towards. After the surgery, Graycen will need physical therapy 5 days a week for at least 6 months. Because of this, I hope it will not hurt to postpone the surgery until after next May, when I will finally graduate from college.

So, it is a long road ahead, but we were told that Graycen will most likely go from walking with her walker to walking unassisted. We were also given hope that she may even be able to run someday. This will be our new goal!
